Flood Plain

Flood Plain was initially two poems. I wrote a poem about the rain coming down on a flood plain and protecting childhood memory, and combined that with a poem I wrote about a change of heart in the midst of childlike infatuation with someone. Together they make for a story about the struggle to protect your thinking from others, and yourself.

Production wise, most of the inspiration for the production of this song came from the band Manchester Orchestra and their song Angel Of Death, particularly for the drums and bass, listen below:

The demo began the same as some of the others, with myself and Dave communicating about different instrumentation ideas before taking the song to the rehearsal room. Below are the first ideas and then the rehearsal room demo.

Taking the demos into the studio we overdubbed the recording of drums and guitar with both myself and Joel playing the drums as I wanted something specific for the verses that was hard to translate to someone else.

Once they were recorded and edited to be in time, vocals were recorded in another studio, and additional guitars and bass were recorded at my home with Dave. See below:

The guitar and bass that Dave recorded straight from his pedal board can be heard below:

Inspired by a session I did with Mikko Gordon I decided to use a few synths to help build some layers in the 2nd verse and choruses. You can see each synth below with a corresponding sound sample of each.

I'm generally very happy with Flood Plain as a song and feel it's probably the most well formed work I've done. Listen Below:
